Black Heritage Trail Marker

Bethlehem African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Burlington, NJ is a cornerstone of Black heritage in the region and a powerful stop on any historical trail honoring African American legacy.

Historic Significance:

Founded in 1830, Bethlehem AME is the oldest Black church in Burlington City. It was born out of a desire for spiritual autonomy during a time when Black worshippers were relegated to segregated spaces in white churches. Leaders like Dr. James Still advocated for a separate congregation to ensure full participation and dignity.

 Location & Landmark:

The church stands at 213 East Pearl Street, near the Delaware River. A historical marker on-site commemorates its founding and enduring legacy. The adjacent cemetery includes graves of African American Civil War veterans, linking the church to broader national history.

Living Legacy:

Bethlehem AME continues to serve the community with vibrant worship, music, and outreach. Its ministries and choirs reflect a deep commitment to faith, justice, and cultural preservation.

If you're curating a Black heritage trail or planning a visit, this church is not just a historical site, it’s a living testament to resilience, faith, and community.
